Teaching legal ethics in contextualised settings

UKCLE PDF project

Project leader: Alwyn Jones, De Montfort University (e-mail: apjones@dmu.ac.uk)
Project summary: funded as part of UKCLE’s participation in the LTSN ETHICS project, this project aimed to identify effective models of teaching ethics in law
Completion date: December 2006
UKCLE funding: £2,120

The benchmark statement for law specifically recognises the need for law students to have an understanding of the context in which law operates, including the ethical context. To date there has been little explicit focus within the law curriculum on integrating the ethical issues that law, and lawyers, must address into the learning and teaching process – this project aimed to provide law teachers with ideas, options and signposts to further sources of information.

The main outcome from the project is a guide to teaching legal ethics, which examines the key issues in ethics teaching and gives an overview of curriculum development options and teaching methods, as well as including a selection of teaching materials.
